The Go-Betweens were an indie rock band formed in Brisbane, Australia in 1977 by singer-songwriters and guitarists, Robert Forster and Grant McLennan.
They began as a pair of teenagers obsessed with the earthy rock of Dylan, CCR, and the Velvet Underground and encouraged by the Australian punk of the Saints.
They were later joined by Lindy Morrison on drums, Robert Vickers on bass guitar and Amanda Brown on violin, oboe, guitar, and backing vocals, before disbanding in late 1989.
The focal point of The Go-Betweens was the song writing skills of Forster and McLennan, each developing a distinctive but complementary style, described by critics as one of the greatest songwriting partnership. Despite the critical acclaim they had minor success in an international basis.
Forster and McLennan reformed the band in 2000 with a new line-up and released three albums. The final end came on 6 May 2006, with McLennan’s death.
"Cattle and Cane" was written by McLennan and Forster and is included in 1983's "Before Hollywood" album. It was selected by Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time.
