Gnarls Barkley is a musical group collaboration between multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) from New York, and rapper/vocalist Cee-Lo Green (Thomas Callaway), from Atlanta.
Their first album, St. Elsewhere, was released in 2006; along with its first single, "Crazy", it was a major commercial success, and both album and single have been noted for their large sales by download. The duo released their second album, The Odd Couple, in March 2008.
"Crazy" became a top ten hit throughout Europe, North America and Australia, in the first half of 2006, reaching number one of the single charts in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Canada, New Zealand and other countries.
The song remained at number one in the UK Singles Chart for nine weeks (which no other song had achieved in over ten years, and was only surpassed by Rihanna's "Umbrella" in July 2007) before the band and their record company decided to remove the single from UK stores so people would "remember the song fondly and not get sick of it."
The song won a 2007 Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, and was also nominated for The Record of the Year in the UK.
It was also nominated and further won a 2006 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song.
The song was also named the best song of 2006 by Rolling Stone and by the Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics poll.
The song was listed at #11 on Pitchfork Media's top 500 songs of the 2000s.
In 2010 it was placed at #100 in the "updated" verison of Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time and ranked at the top position of Rolling Stones top 50 songs of the decade (2000-2009).
